Yesterday (20) marked two years since Ranil Wickremesinghe assumed the presidency following a parliamentary vote.

After the resignation of Gotabaya Rajapaksa from the position, the vote was held on 20 July 2022.

Out of the 223 House members who voted, 134 favoured electing him over the two other candidates – Dullas Alahapperuma and Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Since assuming office, Wickremesinghe has been able to take the country out of its economic crisis.

With his term now ending, the Election Commission is due to announce fresh polls next week.

Although he is yet to make is official, Wickremesinghe is tipped to contest as a nonpartisan candidate.

 

Third ‘Ekwa Jayagamu’ rally in Kadawatha today

 

In the meantime, the third in a series of ‘Ekwa Jayagamu’ rallies in Wickremesinghe’s support takes place in Kadawatha later today (21).

Minister Prasanna Ranatunga, who is its chief organizer, says 39 MPs of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) have confirmed participation.

Also, former members of 19 local government bodies in Gampaha district too, will attend.

SLPP general secretary Sagara Kariyawasam has told ‘Mawbima’ the party has not banned its members from taking part in these rallies.
