Prime minister Dinesh Gunawardena is doing his level best to reverse a decision by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) against supporting incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe at the presidential election.

That firm stance of the party has been prompted by Wickremesinghe’s refusal to grant cabinet positions for SLPP seniors and his attempts to weaken the party.

Gunawardena has urged the SLPP hierarchy at a meeting to come to an agreement with the president with regard to the election.

At this meeting, general secretary Sagara Kariyawasam has spoken at length about how the party was deceived by Wickremesinghe repeatedly.

Also, it was noted that in the event Wickremesinghe is defeated at the election, the SLPP will become weakened further.
