Colombo Fort Magistrate Kosala Senadheera, accused of illegally obtaining electricity and water for the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s official residence, has been suspended by the Judicial Service Commission effective Wednesday (10).

Senadheera, who recently assumed the role of Colombo Fort Chief Magistrate after serving as the Mount Lavinia Chief Magistrate, faces suspension pending the conclusion of investigations, according to sources from the Judicial Service Commission.

The suspension follows a complaint lodged by the Secretary of the Ministry of Justice to the Judicial Service Commission on 8 May, alleging that during Senadheera’s tenure as the Mount Lavinia Chief Magistrate, the official residence of the Magistrate received unauthorised electricity and water from the Court Complex. Following the complaint, a preliminary investigation involving a Senior Assistant Secretary of the Commission has been initiated.

Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, speaking in Parliament recently, highlighted several issues within the judicial sector, citing an incident where unauthorised power lines led to an electrocution. “A power leak was discovered at the Magistrate’s residence, where an illegal connection had diverted electricity from the Court premises,” he claimed. The incident resulted in an electrician from the Justice Ministry being electrocuted, though untiring efforts saved him.

“This was done to merge the electricity billing of the Magistrate’s residence with that of the Courts,” the Minister added, noting that further investigation revealed similar unauthorised water supply connections to the Magistrate’s residence.
