The presidential polls cannot be announced in the event the Supreme Court that hears a related petition issues an injunction, chairman of the Election Commission R.M.L.A. Ratnayake has told mawbima.lk.

The Commission can fix a date for the election after 17 July.

However, the SC is taking up a fundamental rights petition tomorrow that seeks a determination on the term of the president.

If no injunction is issued, the commission can call for nominations and hold the election on a date between 17 September and 16 October.

President’s counsel Upul Kumarapperuma said an injunction would be issued only if the SC decides to proceed with the case.

Seven intervening petitions against the petition are to be filed by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and the Inter University Students' Federation.

Kumarapperuma said the petition carried no justification.
