Police chief Deshabandu Tennakoon has pledged to eliminate drugs and the underworld by the end of this year.
The IGP was addressing a function where policemen were felicitated for their excellence in performing duties and in the field of rugby.
He said the ‘Yukthiya’ operation by the police, STF and the tri-forces has now progressed satisfactorily past 178 days.
So far, 138,116 drug traffickers and addicts, 703 out of 965 members of 91 listed criminal gangs have been taken into custody, said Tennakoon.
Police are committed to their duties more than ever now, said the IGP, adding that except for a few, all the people have placed their trust in the police force.
