The Negombo citizens’ collective has requested Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the archbishop of Colombo, to initiated a dialogue as a peaceful means of resolving the dispute over the fish market of Negombo.
The matter of the ownership of the land where the fish market, or Lellama, is located, is before courts, with the Colombo Archbishop claiming it.
The other party to the case, the fisheries association at Pitipana in Negombo that dates back to the 1800s, has been running the market for 65 years now.
Fishermen have been staging protests against the cardinal over the matter.
The collective, established to ensure justice for victims of the Easter Sunday attacks, urges that as followers of the Christ, they should adhere to his teachings of love and peace.
