Remembrance events have taken place on the 43rd anniversary of the burning down of the Jaffna library.

It was considered to be the best in Asia with more than 97,000 books, historical documents, manuscripts etc.

Chief librarian Sivakaran Anushiya and municipal commissioner S. Krishnendran presided at the remembrance event yesterday (01).

Floral tributes were paid to K.M. Chellappah who donated his house and books in 1933 to lay the groundwork for the library, and Fr. Singarayar David, who died of a heart attack after seeing the library set on fire.

Later in the day, TNPF MP Selvarasa Gajendran led a similar remembrance event.
