The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) thinks of fielding its own presidential candidate without supporting incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe if he fails to lure at least 20 MPs of the Samagi Jana Balawegya (SJB) to the government.

SLPP leader Mahinda Rajapaksa is expected to announce the candidate at one of the youth and women conferences of the party due at the end of next month.

SLPP general secretary Sagara Kariyawasam said the matter of a candidate was under discussion, adding that campaigning for election has already begun.

According to reports, the SLPP considers several as its presidential candidate, with Dhammika Perera mentioned at the top.
