An interest-free loan for students of private universities is to be raised to Rs. one million, said aruna.lk.

Quoting education ministry sources, it said there will be added loan conditions as well.

The number of eligible students will be decided on the basis of a just-concluded ministry programme to gather information on students registered at private universities.

Loans are being given under seven categories.

Until now, Rs. 800,000 was given for a four-year graduate course and Rs.600,000 for a three-year course.

Around 3,500 students benefited from this loan scheme last year.
