Almost 75 per cent of applications for passports submitted online have been rejected, said controller of immigration and emigration Harsha Illukpitiya.

He cited a lack of knowledge in technology and the incorrect updating of documentation as the main reasons for these rejections.

He was speaking to the media at the public security ministry yesterday (18).

Applying for passports can be done under the normal and three-day services, with 51 divisional secretariats equipped with fingerprint identification.

Under the normal service, 192,042 have applied and 91,817 of them used the above fingerprint identification facility.

Passports have so far been printed for 55,600 of these applicants, said Illukpitiya.

The figures under the instant service are 22,471, 18,770 and 17,904 respectively.
