Eight Hindus have complained to the United Nations and the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission against their detention by the police for making offerings at a site also claimed by Buddhists.

Lodging their complaint at the SLHRC on 27 March, they sought compensation for them and punishment for the policemen responsible.

They were acquitted by courts due to a lack of evidence to support charges that they violated a court order and engaged in religious observances at the site at Vedukkunari in Vavuniya on Mahasivatri Day.

At the UN office, they described the harassments they underwent during the incident.

Accompanying them were TNPF MP Selvarasa Gajendran.
