SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem has ruled out resigning from COPE.

He said that talks on the matter with his MPs concluded that at least one opposition MP should be in the committee, or else the government gets a free run at will.

As many as 11 opposition members resigned from COPE in a show of protest against the appointment of SLPP’s Rohitha Abeygunawardena as its chair on 07 March.

The opposition still has Hakeem and SJB’s Nalin Bandara as members.

In a speech to the House on 20 March, Bandara said he would stage a hunger strike if Abeygunawardena did not resign from the COPE chair.
