Deshabandu Tennakoon has met with public security minister Tiran Alles after assuming duties as the new IGP.
The minister instructed him to take all steps in the short-term to ensure public security.
Targets of the ‘Yukthiya’ operation should be met as soon as possible to bring down crimes, he also told the police chief.
In the medium term, police ordinance has to be amended, with police reforms to be effected in consultation with the public in the long-term, said Alles.
Tennakoon pledged to manage affairs in order to meet these objectives.
Ministry secretary Vianni Gunatilake and STF commandant Waruna Jayasundara also attended.
