A latest government move to establish a truth, unity and reconciliation commission (TURC) has been rejected by relatives of missing persons.

War-affected Tamils have instead been demanding an interim justice mechanism with international involvement.

Tamil women who are on a struggle for more than 2,500 days now to seek justice for the missing question if the government is trying to deceive them further.

Such a commission could be established for the south and something productive done for the Sinhalese, said head of the association of missing persons in Mannar Manuel Udayachandra at a media briefing at the weekend.

None of the commissions established so far had done justice to us, and only were a waste of time, she added.

 

 

A draft bill for the establishment of TURC was gazette on 01 January on the orders of the foreign affairs minister.
