Police are investigating a seafront hotel in Dehiwala said to be owned by a drug kingpin presently in hiding in Dubai.
Shiran Basik is running the place by using the name of a well-known tuition teacher, said police headquarters sources.
Meanwhile, the Coast Conservation Department found it to be an unauthorized construction and initiated legal action about 1 ½ years ago.
Its director general R.A.S. Ranawaka said they were unaware of its ownership.
On a complaint by the department, police made submissions to court which has imposed a fine on the hotel.
According to the police, the Coast Conservation Department has the powers to either confiscate or dismantle the illegal construction.
