Medicines imports remain uncleared at the Customs with the National Medicines Regulatory Authority not making the authorizations required each day, said the Sri Lanka Chamber of Pharmaceutical Industry.

In a letter to the president, the Chamber said 15 medicines shipments ordered by 15 importers are now being held at the Colombo Port.

Another 84 ships are due to arrive, it said.

These orders are for 129 medicines varieties in all, said the Chamber.

The letter noted that importers are forced to pay demurrage, while the quality of the stocks get affected due to their being stored for long periods.

The chamber called for immediate intervention by the president to resolve this matter.
