The Election Commission has been officially asked to fill the parliamentary seat of Nazir Ahmed that has fallen vacant.
Secretary general of parliament Kushani Ronahadeera on 09 October informed the commission as per attorney general’s advice that Ahmed’s seat has been annulled as per a court ruling.
As the candidate with the next highest preferential votes for the SLMC from Batticaloa, Ali Zahir Moulana is expected to be appointed to the position.
On 06 October, the Supreme Court found the party’s decision to expel Ahmed was lawful.
Election chief Saman Sri Ratnayake spoke to Neth News with regard to the matter.
