The Trincomalee magistrate has banned protests near Boralukanda Buddhist temple at Nilaveli on or around 01 October.

The order was issued to eight named respondents upon submissions by the police that Tamils were planning an agitation against the temple.

Earlier, eastern province governor Senthil Thondaman ordered a halt to constructions at the temple.

In protest, two Buddhist monks stormed a meeting of the district development committee and spoke against the governor.

Thondaman said constructions could not be approved without permission from the Pradeshiya Sabha.

Later, one of the monks, Ven. Polhengoda Uparathana Thera, told the media that they did not need to seek anyone’s permission to build a temple.
