Tamils have been permitted to worship at a Hindu site at Kattuvan in Jaffna for the first time after 1990.

Among the first devotees who went to Sri Muttumari Amman Kovil on 22 September was state minister Vijayakala Maheswaran.

Although a place there dedicated to God Skanda has been worshipped by soldiers, the entire Kovil was in a dilapidated condition, correspondents report.

Mahewaran told the people that the opening of the site for worshipping was the result of a request she had made from Ranil Wickremesinghe when he was the prime minister.

However, the area of the Kovil is yet to be freed by the Army.
