A new circular has been issued to end the retaining of interest on deposits of less than Rs. 100,000 held by senior citizens, said state finance minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya.
Speaking to the media in Ruwanwella on Wednesday (27), he said a hotline (1944) has been introduced and a separate officer deployed at every Inland Revenue office for anyone to obtain further information.
Until now, the interest was released after a lapse of a year only, but the new circular enables senior citizens to withdraw interest early.
