President Ranil Wickremesinghe and SLPP founder Basil Rajapaksa met recently for talks on upcoming elections.

They discussed the possibility of holding a general election first, with Rajapaksa explaining in detail how that would impact the outcome.

For that, he gave results of an opinion survey conducted at district level.

Also, Rajapaksa predicted what would happen at district level, if they ally and if they contest on their own, giving the number of possible seats in both cases.

They did not decide whether it would be the general or the presidential election that should be held first, but agreed that it should be the one most advantageous to them.

According to unconfirmed reports, an election is due most probably by March next year.
