Veteran politician and trade unionist Bala Tampoe has been remembered at his 9th death anniversary.

An event took place at the Kollupitiya head office of the Ceylon Mercantile Union of which he was the chief secretary.

CMU members paid floral tributes to a photograph of Tampoe and then held a meeting.

Deputy chief secretary Peter de Almeida and deputy secretary Selliah Palaninathan made speeches in remembrance of their late leader.

Born on 23 May 1922, Tampoe became a lawyer on criminal law while actively involved with the LSSP.

He lost his job at the Agricultural Department for having joined the 1947 strike and then joined the CMU.

He became its chief secretary on the following year and held that position until his death on 01 September 2014 at the age of 92.
