The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has written to the Election Commission with a call to hold local government polls as soon as possible.

Further, the issue was raised by SLPP general secretary Sagara Kariyawaam and 30 former heads of LG bodies from the party at a meeting with president Ranil Wickremesinghe some days ago.

They detailed the difficulties faced by the candidates due to the postponement of the election.

The SLPP has decided to ask the government and the Election Commission at least to annul the circulars that have laid down various restrictions on the candidates, if the election cannot be held.

Some party MPs are to act upon the matter after meeting their leader Mahinda Rajapaksa later this week.

The SLPP has received complaints that with no LG polls held, grassroots activities of the party have been impacted negatively.
