Several buildings of Colombo National Hospital yesterday (14) experienced an eight-hour power failure that affected its services.

The outage occurred around 10.00 am to inactivate the air-conditioning and the internal telephone line, with torches used to give light for surgeries, said a hospital official.

Life-saving machines at ICUs had to be powered by batteries, while stored blood and certain medicines needing low temperatures were affected.

The official added that an inquiry was on to determine how this power outage occurred, despite the hospital’s maintenance division being run by nine administrative officials.
