A patient under treatment at the surgical ward of Gampaha district hospital collapsed and died five minutes after being given a dose of ceftazidime on 11 August.
He had previously been given 10 doses of the same medicine, and the 11th had been fatal, said a hospital official.
Staff trained on how to act in instances of medicines allergies failed to save his life.
The use of this medicine has been suspended on the instructions of the hospital’s director.
