The assistant housekeeper in charge of parliament has been suspended on charges of sexual and other harassment of several female housekeepers working under him.

Secretary general of parliament Kushani Rohanadeera yesterday (11) took the step in consideration of information given by the alleged victims.

Rohanadeera appointed a three-member committee to inquire into their complaints, before which some housekeepers volunteered statements.

Several other male officers are under investigation and action pending on similar accusations.

Authorities are also looking into revelations the harassment victims are under threat not to give evidence to the committee.

The female MPs caucus is separately inquiring into the matter, with its member Rohini Kumari Wijerathna already having obtained statements from several female housekeepers.
