A new political party will be formed next month, for which an office has already been opened in Rajagiriya, said MP Nimal Lanza.

Noting that he had left the government 18 months ago, he has told ‘Anidda’ newspaper that 69 SLPP MPs who have done likewise would form the new party with him.

At present, arrangements for the party are being made at the grassroots level, Lanza said.

The party office at Lake Drive, Rajagiriya was opened on 20 July by Sugeeswara Bandara, private secretary to ex-president Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Also present on the occasion was one-time JVP MP and trade unionist Siripala Amarasinghe, who was later in charge of Basil Rajapaksa’s propaganda campaign. Amarasinghe is now handling the affairs of the newly-opened office.

Allied presently with Lanza are a group of independent MPs led by Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Lasantha Alagiyawanna and others who have joined the government from the SLFP and MP Sudarshani Fernandopulle, reports said.
