A petition filed before the court of appeal seeks legal action against the IGP and other officials over their failure to prevent violence across the island subsequent to the attack on GotaGotGama protest site on 09 May last year.
The court granted leave to proceed with the petition filed by protest activist Janath S. Vitarana.
A two-member CA panel issued notice on the respondents to make submissions at the next hearing on 27 September.
The petitioner notes the Human Rights Commission has recommended that the IGP was responsible for the failure to prevent the violence.
He seeks an order to the attorney general to name the IGP and other police officials as respondents in a case on the same matter pending before the Colombo Fort magistrate’s court.
An order to the police commission to initiate disciplinary action against them is also being sought.
