Public security minister Tiran Alles yesterday (31) made token handovers of rewards and commendations to four civilians and police officers who have shown exemplary conduct.

The minister praised the recipient police officers, who performed their duties to the letter, without resorting to bribe-taking.

Also, police expect continued support by the public to prevent crime, he said.

Recipients of rewards and commendations on the occasion included two civilians.

They were H.A. Dilip Saman Kumara and R.A. Silara, for capturing a gold chain thief at Divulapitiya on 23 July and handing him over to the police.

Two sergeants D.M.S.K. Dissanayake and L.A.I.G.H. Liyanarachchi were recognized for refusing a Rs. 100,000 bribe from a lorry that had been transporting 10 cattle at Doratiyawa on 17 July and performing their duties.

Answering a question raised by a journalist with regard to attacks by gunmen in motorcycles, Alles said such incidents were reported especially from the southern province.

Preventive measures taken have led to a reduction in crimes, he said, but declined to divulge details about such steps.
