Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) lawmaker Eran Wickramaratne has downplayed the still existent, immature talk about selling education when the private sector contributions are obtained in higher education.

Speaking to the media in Colombo yesterday (26), he referred to the now released parliamentary committee report on expanding higher educational opportunities.

The MP attributed the failure of the education system to boost human resources development to the thinking that education should be provided by the state free of charge.

As a result, higher educational opportunities are limited – with 40,000 gain university admission annually, while 150,000 others dropout, he noted.

MPs, as people’s representatives, should consider not just their own children, but all children alike, Wickramaratne said.

The SJB has formulated a mechanism to ensure state and private sector investments on promoting higher educational opportunities, he added.
