Media spokesman of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) S.M. Marikkar says a heinous economic crime is now taking place.
Addressing journalists yesterday (24), he referred to the government move to raise the Rs. 4,979 billion debt limit permitted in the appropriation bill.
He questioned the motives behind the need for a further Rs. 9,000 billion.
It will raise the present debt of USD 83 billion by another USD 30 billion within the next six months, Marikkar noted.
If parliament has the monetary powers, the government should have revealed why the debt limit is going to be raised, he added.
