A health sector trade union warns of strike action if the retirement age is extended for specialist doctors only.

Ravi Kumudesh, president of the health professionals union, said staging the major work stoppage in September would depend on the minister’s decision.

A paper seeking approval to raise the retirement age of specialist doctors to 63 years will be submitted to the cabinet this week, said health ministry secretary Janaka Sri Chandragupta.

The decision, about which courts have been informed, has been taken in view of a shortage of specialist doctors due to their retirement at 60 years, he said.

The court of appeal was informed about it through a motion on June 28.

The matter will be taken up for hearing again on September 01.
