Resizing the troops and withdrawing military camps from certain rural religious places will not threaten national and regional security or the religious places in question, defence secretary Kamal Gunaratne has said.
He informed the sectoral oversight committee on national security about this at a meeting on June 07.
During its deliberations, the committee also paid attention to the need to promote communal reconciliation and to defeat extremism.
The foreign ministry should mediate in resolving international travel bans on military officers, committee chairman Sarath Weerasekara noted.
