The government has abandoned plans to hold snap presidential polls, ‘Deshaya’ reports.
According to the latest, a presidential election is to be called only after August 2024.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe plans to make preliminary arrangements beforehand, with his name coming up as a possible independent candidate.
Sajith Premadasa, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Sarath Fonseka, Gajendra Kumar Ponnambalam, Dhammika Perera, Dilith Jayaweera and Janaka Ratnayake have been mentioned as contenders as well.
Minority parties led by Kumar Welgama, Rauff Hakeem and Jeevan Thondaman are tipped to support Wickremesinghe, while Palani Digambaram, Mano Ganeshan and Prof. G.L. Peiris are likely to ally with the SJB.
