The chairman of the Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) Karu Jayasuriya says that he expects the law will be implemented against the Puttalam district MP who was arrested over smuggling gold buscuits and a stock of mobile phones.

"The NMSJ is deeply shocked that an MP representing the Puttalam District has been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake for having smuggled gold biscuits and jewellery weighing 3.5 kilograms and a stock of mobile phones worth more than Rs. 7 million into the country. We are of the view that we, as a country, should be ashamed of such conducts," the former speaker said issuing a statement.

He observed that the person known as "Honourable MP" having smuggled the said items using the Very Important Person (VIP) terminal of the BIA reflects one small aspect of the corrupt actions being carried out by some parties who are considered as the elite.

"By this action, the concerned MP has insulted the entire Parliament. Acknowledging that there are 'Honourable' MPs, we emphasise that they are also disgraced by these kinds of incidents," he said.

Noting that this incident should not be considered only as a violation of the Customs Ordinance, he said that this may have violated the exchange laws of the country.

"The responsible parties should pay close attention to this matter. We expect that the law will be implemented against the person who has been accused, regardless of their rank," he stressed.
