The governors of the northern, eastern and northwestern provinces were removed from their positions yesterday (15).

President Ranil Wickremesinghe will appoint new governors by tomorrow (17), said the President's Media Division.

It is reported that P.S.M. Charles will be appointed to the north, Senthil Thondaman to the east and Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena to the northwest.

The removed governors were Jeevan Thiagaraja, Anuradha Yahampath and Wasantha Karannagoda respectively.

Earlier in the day, SLPP general secretary Saraga Kariyawasam said the president has the ability and the right, as per the constitution, to appoint and remove provincial governors.

Meanwhile, five governors who have the approval of SLPP national organizer Basil Rajapaksa are to be retained.

There were plans to remove the governor of the western province too, but it had been withdrawn at the request of former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
