An attempt by the Navy to expand a camp at Kayts Island in Jaffna has been thwarted by Tamil fishermen.
Survey department officials had to turn away from surveying the land earmarked for takeover in the face of protests at Thambati on April 01 Fishermen charged the livelihood of 225 families has been affected by the Navy’s erection of a temporary camp there that blocks access to a jetty.
Carrying placards and shouting slogans, protestors charged that moves were afoot to take over land for the Navy permanently.
This is despite a decision by the divisional secretariat not to allow extending the camp as it will disrupt future development of the jetty.
Protestors handed over a petition to the survey department officials.
