The National People's Power (NPP) says it is against an indefinite strike action despite its support for a joint union action tomorrow (15) to highlight public issues.

Its executive committee member K.D. Lalkantha said an effort representative of these issues is yet to materialize was their concern.

Public support for a work stoppage only against the tax increases will be limited, he noted.

Meanwhile, doctors are going ahead with a planned strike in government hospitals in northern, north central, north western, Sabaragamua and Uva provinces today, Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) executive committee member Dr. Ruwan Jayasuriya said.

A discussion with trade unions of professionals at the Presidential Secretariat, not attended by the president, ended with a promise to solutions today, he said.

Port and water supply workers, university lecturers, bank employees too, are presently involved in union action.
