MP Wimal Weerawansa yesterday (23) brought up in parliament a recent top-secret visit to Sri Lanka by a team of US officials on February 14.
He questioned their passports or visas not being checked, closure of the expressway to other users while they were driven to Colombo, disarming of State Intelligence Service officials during their visit to the SIS and the clandestine manner of their brief stay.
"We are not talking about an issue that does not exist. So we want to know why they came? Who did they meet? What was discussed? Our government has a responsibility. If they are trying to place the State Intelligence Service under a CIA chief, it may harm not only Sri Lanka but also neighboring India, it is the responsibility of the government to inform the House and not to take such serious decisions and put this country in trouble," he said.
During his speech, Weerawansa accused the chief opposition whip of being prejudiced against a proposal submitted to the House with regard to this visit by the US officials.
He also referred to the bailout package being sought from the International Monetary Fund as well as the newly-introduced taxes.
