The Election Commission has ruled out holding the local government polls without adequate funding being made available.

Its chairman Nimal Punchihewa has told lankadeepa.lk the Finance Ministry had so far granted Rs. 25 million only to meet the basic expenditure.

He said a written request for sufficient funding will be sent to the ministry shortly.

The projected cost of the LG polls is Rs. 10 billion.

After Punchihewa told the Supreme Court the election would be held, the finance secretary informed the court of an inability to provide the funding required.

Further, a gazette is yet to be issued for the March 09 election date that has come via an announcement only.
