The Ministry of Health Services has downplayed concerns about a spread of monkeypox in Sri Lankan after the first case was reported.

Director general of health services Dr. Asela Gunawardena said at a media briefing yesterday (04) that people need not have any undue fears.

The patient was detected swiftly due to the well-implemented health protocols in the country, he said.

Speaking further, Dr. Gunawardena stressed that infections could happen through a very close contact with a patient for a considerable period only.

He advised people to consult the nearest health institution in case of any suspicions.

Media should refrain from publishing personal details if any more patients are found, he said.
