President Gotabaya Rajapaksa via an extraordinary gazette has decided to prorogue Parliament with effect from midnight on Sunday (12).

Accordingly, Parliament had been prorogued from December 12, until 10 am on January 18.

The Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake earlier stated that the Committee on Parliamentary Business which met under the chairmanship of Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena had decided to commence Parliament Sittings for the year 2022 on January 1.

The Committee had also decided that the vote of condolence on behalf of the late former Minister Mangala Samaraweera will be presented on January 13 from 10 am to 4.30 pm.

However, with the President proroguing Parliament from midnight yesterday, the vote of condolence on behalf of the late former Minister has been postponed.
