An arrest warrant has been issued against Upul Tharanga, the Chairman of the Selection Committee at Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) due to his failure to appear in Court yesterday (08).

The Matale High Court has issued the warrant for the Police to arrest him and produce before the Court in connection to an ongoing match fixing legal case, based on a complaint filed initially by Upul Tharanga himself involving the “Legends Cricket Trophy 2024” (LCT) League Tournament which ended at Pallekale Stadium in Kandy in March 2024 for his failure to appear before the Court to give evidence regarding the case.

The warrant has been issued for the arrest of Upul Tharanga at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) due to him going abroad without notifying Court.

Tharanga is currently in the United States where he is participating in a franchise cricket tournament.

Upul Tharanga had complained to the Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Sports Offences that Indian national Yogi Patel, who is the owner of the Kandy Samp Army team that participated in the tournament, had approached him to engage in cheating through match fixing by pressurising players to engage in corrupt practices.

Tharanga was to be cross-examined yesterday and it was revealed in the Court that the Chairman of the Selection Committee at SLC, Upul Tharanga had gone overseas to participate in the American National League cricket tournament without informing Court.
