The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) announced a new initiative to recover unpaid taxes from individuals by visiting their premises, after September 30 to collect taxes from those who have not paid before the deadline (September 30).

Earlier, taxpayers were notified to settle all outstanding tax payments under the self-assessment system by September 30. A significant number of individuals have already paid their dues.

However, Inland Revenue Commissioner General Sepalika Chandrasekera said the department initiated a new programme last Friday (4) to collect the unpaid taxes by directly visiting the remaining defaulters.

She further noted that officials have been instructed to swiftly proceed with legal measures in the recovery of outstanding taxes under the self-assessment system.

The Commissioner General also revealed that the Inland Revenue Department has been tasked with generating Rs.2,024 billion in revenue for the year. By September 30, Rs.1,417 billion had been collected, amounting to over 70% of the annual target.

She highlighted that this is the highest revenue target assigned to the department in its history, and despite the upcoming election season, she assured that all department officials have been informed of the need to meet the revenue goal.
