A man claiming to be a supporter of new president Anura Kumara Dissanayake has reportedly threatened Tamil women who protested in Vavuniya to demand justice for their missing children.
The agitation took place in front of the town’s bus stand yesterday (01) to coincide with the international children’s day.
A man who arrived there demanded they abandoned the protest, saying that he was with the president.
The women then asked him in one voice to intervene and grant them justice.
The man accused the protestors of getting funds from the LTTE and the Tamil Diaspora.
Warning them that their bank accounts would be investigated, he left the scene amid continuing opposition to him, correspondents reported.
Sivanandan Jenita, who led the protest, demanded an inquiry against the person who threatened them.
Human rights groups have listed 29 children aged below 10 years among those who had gone missing since their surrender to the authorities on the penultimate day of the war.
