A heated verbal exchange between Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka and former President Maithripala Sirisena which erupted during the debate in Parliament on the Channel 4 allegations on the Easter Sunday bomb attacks caught the attention of many.

The verbal battle erupted when Fonseka called MP Sirisena one of the two masterminds behind the April 21 bomb attacks.

The Field Marshal said this when Sirisena recalled that the former could not even defend the Army Headquarters.

“Fonseka went with his intestines damaged after he was attacked,” he said.

Fonseka who responded named Sirisena as one of the masterminds behind the Easter Sunday bomb attacks.

“This is one of the masterminds behind the Easter Sunday attacks. This fool does not understand the duties of an army commander,” he said.

“More than 1,000 soldiers died during Fonseka’s tenure as the army commander,” Sirisena said.

“Around 5,000 soldiers were killed during the battle but they managed to kill more than 25,000 terrorists. We regret supporting this man as the Presidential candidate in 2015,” Fonseka shot back.

State Minister Dinana Gamage who raised an objection said individual MPs cannot use the time allocated for debates over their personal battles.

"Please see that other MPs have adequate speaking time for all MPs,” she said.
