Palitha Range Bandara is to be removed from his position as general secretary of the UNP, party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided.
According to reliable sources, the decision is prompted by serious accusations that have been levelled against Bandara.
The party constitution allows the leader to remove and appoint the general secretary any time.
Reports say Bandara had not reported for duty at Sirikotha for the past few days.
Wickremesinghe decided yesterday (28) to hand over presidential election campaign responsibilities to UNP office-bearers, barring Bandara.
Accordingly, deputy general secretary Krishantha Theodore, Sirikotha CEO Shamal Senaratne and election operations chief Ronald Perera will be stationed at the party headquarters.
