The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Presidential candidate MP Namal Rajapaksa said the Samurdhi Movement which lifts the poor people out of poverty by strengthening the rural economy, will be further strengthened under his government.

“I will provide space for children belonging to a Samurdhi recipient families to be able to go to the local and international job markets to find employment and therefore, instead of becoming Samurdhi recipients always, I will make them to become people who will generate income to the local economy,” Namal Rajapaksa said.

The SLPP Presidential candidate for the upcoming Presidential Election, Namal Rajapaksa said this while addressing a public rally held at the Sathipola Stadium, Ridiyagama in Kurunegala on Monday (26).

Namal Rajapaksa speaking further at the public rally said: “We want to strengthen the Samurdhi Movement. Today, some leaders are questioning why this Samurdhi is still given. They are asking why families are still given Rs.5,000 each. These leaders are thinking that the Samurdhi Movement is a failure. Those who complained about the Samurdhi movement in this manner brought in Aswesuma and created projects that didn’t last for more than three to six months.”

“We believe that it is in the Samurdhi Movement that the rural economy of this country as well as the programme that can bring innocent parents out of poverty. Accordingly, I will strengthen the Samurdhi movement under the government that I will form. We will be turning the Samurdhi recipients into entrepreneurs. Through that we hope to build the local businessmen.”

Namal Rajapaksa further said that not only will he protect the Samurdhi Movement but will be implementing the policy decisions necessary to turn Samurdhi recipients into entrepreneurs in fields of technology, agriculture or in the international job market to find suitable jobs relevant to those job markets to bring them out of being Samurdhi recipients eventually.
