Police in Ampara have been accused of disrupting a weekend public awareness campaign by a Tamil party calling for a boycott of the presidential polls.

The TNPF lodged complaints with the election commissioner and the Human Rights Commission over the incident at Tirukkovil on 24 August.

Its MP Selvaraja Gajendran called for disciplinary action against the OIC of Tirukkovil who ordered a halt to the leaflet distribution.

Video footage show the police officer barring the MP from distributing the leaflets.

It is against the constitution to influence the people against voting, the OIC told the MP.

The TNPF has been involved in a campaign in the northeast against the election for a head of state for the majority community in a united country.

Gajendran said they would not demand a boycott if the candidates are prepared for a federal constitution.

Amid the police disruption, the awareness was halted.
