Ninety-five percent of the population will not be impacted by the proposed property tax, said the UNP’s national secretary and former finance minister Ravi Karunanayake.
Speaking to the media in Colombo yesterday (30), he accused the opposition of creating monsters over this tax and misleading the country and the people.
"The property tax will apply in lieu of income and shouldn’t someone who earns more than Rs. 100,000 from his rented houses pay taxes?," he asked.
The opportunist and power-hungry opposition is setting fire to the country by claiming this tax will affect the entire population, he said.
Speaking further, Karunanayake said the people expect president Ranil Wickremesinghe to do something for the country after having won their confidence by proving himself within a short period.
He will win the presidential election with a massive majority, and it is only him and the UNP who are capable of building the country, said the UNP national secretary.
His journey along with the IMF has been a success and creditors have agreed on the matter of our repayment capabilities and how it should be done, said Karunanayake.
"The Paris Club, Japan, China and India have recognized our debt restructuring process. The government cannot hide, and has nothing to hide, over the matter either. Details will be known during the parliamentary debate," he noted.
Karunanayake said the opposition was not presenting its solutions to any of these issues.
Anyway, public life is not that easy, he conceded, adding that the government knows the people to be still under intense pressure.
That too, will be rectified in the future, he said.
The target to create one million entrepreneurs is being reached, which should be achieved by defeating bureaucracy, he added.
